Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa is literally defined as “blank slate.” The concept came to light through a philosophy postulating on the evolution of the mind. According to the philosophy it was generally accepted and assumed that all humans were born as “blank slates;” clean and free of influence, pre-destiny, or ability. The discussion put forth that evolution was the result of individual nurturing, environment, and influence rather than inbred potential.  It wasn’t until psychologists such as Carl Jung began to consider the idea of a collective unconscious that people began to see evolution more as a combination of both nature and nurture. These theories maintained that we come to life with pre-determined characteristics. So rather than being “clean slate” we are in fact the by-product of many generations before. This mandala speaks to the “nature” concept since the colors and shapes represent anything but a clean slate.
